The Occupational Safety program at VCU is designed to support employees’ and students'; right to work
in an environment free of recognized hazards that may cause illness or injury. We accomplish this by:
Hazard analysis and safety consulations
Promoting Safety initiatives
Facilitate learning through creation and distribution of safety training
Identification of hazardous enviornments and hazardous behaviors through regular internal safety
audits.
Encourage collaboration to foster safety culture and alignment of effort
Increase compliance by leveraging robust recordkeeping systems

All emloyee injuries are reported to Virginia Workers’ Compensation Commission via VCU
Human Resources and our third party claims management company.
A summary claim is forwarded to VCU Occupational Safety.
All reported injuries are investigated internally by VCU Occupational Safety.
VCU Occupational Safety makes the determination if a particular injury or illness is OSHA
Reportable or OSHA Recordable based on OSHA rules and requirements.
All OSHA Recordable injuries are mainained on the OSHA 300 log. Injury rates are calculated
consistent with OSHA rules and requirements.
All reported injuries, recordable or not, are maintained in an internal database and used to track
potenital safety trends and identify areas for safety program improvement.
