In April 2023, the Institute for Sustainable Energy and Environment (ISEE) at VCU hosted the inaugural Symposium on Sustainable Energy and Environment. This annual symposium invited speakers from academia, government, industry, and the public sector with diverse expertise to outline the challenges and ways to mitigate the adverse effects caused by fossil fuels. Ann Kildahl, Director of Sustainability at VCU, began serving as the Chair of the Virginia Sustainability in Higher Education (VASHE) Network in 2023.

In 2024, VCU Sustainability started a data and STARS reporting discussion group set to have regular meetings with other STARS reporters from member schools of the Virginia Sustainability in Higher Education (VASHE) Network. The purpose of this group was to give all members the opportunity to discuss data and STARS reporting best practices and tips. In particular, the purpose of the group was to allow those members who have been working with sustainability reporting longer (like VCU) to mentor newer members of the group.
