1st campaign
A brief description of the campaign:
During Earth Month, April, 2024, specifically for Food Waste Prevention Week, VCU Sustainability hosted a composting challenge where students could bring any scraps of food they collected throughout the week to two collection events. Students who brought their scraps to compost were entered into a raffle to receive VCU Sustainability swag like recycled, reusable totes and reusable, compostable utensils. Leading up to and during the event, Sustainability staff and interns were educating students on composting and food waste reduction.
A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:
Through this campaign, students were able to learn about what can and cannot be composted while also participating to increase the amount of compostable waste that was diverted from the landfill. This challenge also allowed students to see all at once how much food waste they produce in a week to help them consider ways that they can reduce their food waste moving forward. VCU has some limited composting on campus, so the number of users of those bins was able to be increased by educating more students on the availability of composting on campus and how to compost correctly.

A brief description of the campaign (2nd campaign):
Throughout 2023, VCU Sustainability hosted a number of donation drives across both the Health System and Monroe Park campuses encouraging VCU employees to bring any items from home that they would like to donate to the Free Store. In the advertising for the drives and during the drives themselves, employees and volunteers from VCU Sustainability were able to educate employees and students on the purpose of the Free Store and the ways in which it reduces waste on campus while also making household essentials available to any VCU community members who need them.
