Eco Reps

A brief description of the student educators program (1st program):

The Virginia Commonwealth University Hall Council Eco-Rep program facilitates peer-to-peer education and provides leadership opportunities to students through engagement and service. The Eco-Rep program is dedicated to enhancing sustainability in residence halls and contributing to positive behavior change on campus. Eco-reps actively engage fellow students around sustainability issues such as resources consumption, waste management, and other environmental issues. This program serves as a platform for collaboration between students and administrators, provides a venue for students to express concerns and provides leadership opportunities for students. The Eco-Rep program was active through the 2022 academic year.

The Eco-reps program's target audience is all students living in residence halls. They serve as peer-to-peer educators through Residence Hall Council's community meetings, engagement opportunities, and service.

Sustainability Interns

A brief description of the student educators program (2nd program):

Sustainability office interns are students with an interest in sustainability who conduct regular campaigning events throughout the semester, focusing on how students can live sustainably on and off campus. Major events include Earth Day and Campus Sustainability Day. These interns provide support to VCU Sustainability throughout all its initiatives, through graphic design work, social media campaigns, gardens and forestry work, zero waste work, and educational booths at relevant student events. Ideally the work of these interns would reach the entire campus, but the direct impact of their efforts can be conservatively estimated at 3000 students.


A brief description of the student educators program’s target audience (2nd program):

Sustainability interns' target audiences include all VCU students, staff, and faculty, as well as volunteers, local community members, and other interested parties. Interns engage with their target audience through the Free Store, gardens, and community forestry programs as well as through social media, educational booths, and sustainability events on campus.

Outdoor Adventure Program Student Outdoor Leadership Experience

A brief description of the student educators program (3rd program):

RecWell's Outdoor Adventure Program is designed to help students and the VCU Community learn new skills, gain confidence, get an adrenaline rush, and explore nature in and around RVA and beyond.The OAP offers Student Outdoor Leadership Experiences (SOLE). These intensive trainingsares the foundation of the OAP trips program and are designed to provide opportunities for skill development, personal growth, and leadership experience for potential OAP student leaders. Using the outdoors as our classroom, participants will also gain a connection to the natural world and consider how to provide similar experiences on OAP trips.

Those who take part in this course are professionallly trained in group dynamics, teaching techniques, decision making, risk management, backcountry travel, technical outdoor skills, and leave no trace principles. Those who complete SOLE can then lead OAP trips and serve as student educators.

OAP Trips led by SOLE trained student educators are open to VCU Students and the wider VCU Community who are RecWell members.

Additional programs 

A brief description of all other student peer-to-peer sustainability outreach and education programs:

RamBikes is a student run service and education based resource for VCU students, staff, and faculty to work on their bikes, and to learn to perform bike maintenance. The RamBikes student workers fix bikes for free, teach you how to fix them on your own, hold group rides to educate students on sustainable transportation and bike safety, and conduct regular bicycle learning workshops for students and the community. RamBikes also runs a free short-term bike loan program for anyone at VCU and a long-term free bike rental program for international students.

 

RamBikes target audiences include all VCU students, staff, and faculty as well as other interested parties. They engage them by helping with any services needed for bikes, hosting group rides, workshops, the bicycle loan program, and social media.
