Inventory of the institution’s sustainability research:
A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory:
The total number of employees that conduct research was determined by identifying the full-time instructional faculty in the VCU Common Data set. The definition of which is, “faculty employed on a full-time basis for instruction (including those with released time for research).”
This inventory was completed by reviewing publicly available research publications on the Web of Science database and by reviewing individual faculty member research interests listed on their department websites. The Web of Science database was searched using specific sustainability search terms generated from previous STARS research inventory submissions. This effectively indicates that a review of literature from current professors, and published within the scope of this reporting period, was completed and used to confirm that the inventory met the sustainability research definition used by STARS, below.
Sustainability research is research and scholarship that explicitly addresses the concept of sustainability, furthers our understanding of the interdependence of ecological and social/economic systems, or has a primary and explicit focus on a major sustainability challenge.
