All Resident Assistants (RAs) receive sustainability training in addition to their regular RA training. RA's are responsible for being available to residents to serve as a resource, mediator, advisor, and crisis responder. Respond to student situations, policy violations, and emergencies. RA's are also responsible for planning and implementing social activities for residents.


A brief description of how the student educators are selected (1st program):

Resident assistants are selected based on the following criteria:
1. Sophomore standing (having earned at least 24 credit hours) by date of employment, junior/senior standing preferred.
2. Candidates should have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 to apply
• Candidates must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 to be hired.
• If an RA’s cumulative GPA falls below 2.5 at any time, her/his RA position may be terminated.
3. Candidates may not be on University or Residence Hall disciplinary probation.
4. Candidates may not have outstanding debts to the university.
5. RA's may not hold a major office in a major student organization. (e.g., SGA, RHA, IFC).
6. The RA position is for one academic year at a time. Current staff member must re-apply. Re-hire is contingent upon a successful evaluation and re-application process.
7. In order to be considered for the RA position you must turn in an application and complete the entire interview process.


A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (1st program):

Resident assistants receive group training in the subjects of leadership, teamwork, conflict resolution, event planning, communication skills, and sustainability.


A brief description of the staff and/or other financial support the institution provides to the program (1st program):

Resident assistants receive financial and staff support from the VCU Office of Residential Life and Housing.
