Name of the institution’s featured sustainability program, initiative, or accomplishment:
University Sustainability Plan

A brief description of the institution’s featured program, initiative, or accomplishment:
Villanova’s Sustainability Plan was developed by the Villanova Sustainability Leadership Council. It is unique in its basis on a quantitative materiality study that utilizes the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) to set weights for each of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The weights are determined from broad stakeholder analysis and become the basis for a sustainability score that is similar to the STARS rating but based on separately chosen metrics and the specific priorities of the Villanova community. The Plan contains 2030 objectives for each SDG and interim 3-year “Key Results” that direct action on individual metrics in each phase of the 12-year plan. The plan’s priorities and Key Results are re-evaluated before each new phase begins to keep up with developments in understanding and circumstances. New projects are then drafted to meet each Key Result.

Second Point of Distinction

Name of a second highlighted sustainability program/initiative/accomplishment:
The Villanova Sustainability Leadership Council (SLC)

A brief description of the second program/initiative/accomplishment:
The Villanova Sustainability Leadership Council (SLC) was formed to develop and manage Villanova’s Sustainability Plan in 2018. Leaders from every college and many high-level administrators are represented on the SLC, which reports directly to the University President. Membership has grown to include almost every university function including all colleges, general counsel, advancement, finance, dining, communications, operations, and more. The Council is co-chaired by the director of the Sustainable Engineering graduate program and the Assistant Vice President of Mission & Ministry. Eventually, the current co-chairs will be succeeded by a sustainability officer and the chair of the newly created Villanova Institute for Climate, Justice and Sustainability. The significant influence of the members of the SLC allows for its decisions to be implemented without much further oversight, which improves its efficiency. Five committees were also established to handle the implementation of sustainability projects and policies that are approved by the SLC. The committees are
1. Operations
2. Academics and Research
