Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Building Thoreau's Cabin
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
For the 2020-2021 academic year, Vassar College adopted an 'island' model that limited off-campus travel, including field trips. In an effort to expand learning opportunities within these restrictions, Professor Paul Kane led a group of students to construct a to-scale replica of Thoreau's cabin on Walden Pond at the Vassar Farm and Ecological Preserve in Spring 2021. Over the course of the semester, students learned about green building practices and the role we as humans occupy in the environment. The cabin remains permanently on-site at Vassar's 500-acre ecological preserve and is accompanied by informational signage for visitors.
