In order to arrive at the number of students engaged in community service we first consulted a variety of community service program directors and student coordinators regarding the number of students involved with their programs. These numbers were added to come up with a number of participant-equivalents.
A survey was then used to gauge the level of overlap; that is, the percentage of students engaged in more than one community service activity. This percentage (18%) was then subtracted from the initial number of participants to come up with the number of actual participants.
