Does the institution have strategies in place to safely dispose of all hazardous, special (e.g. coal ash), universal, and non-regulated chemical waste and seek to minimize the presence of these materials on campus?:
Yes

A brief description of steps taken to reduce hazardous, special (e.g. coal ash), universal, and non-regulated chemical waste:

Hazardous wastes are stored in laboratories or lab preparation areas according to each hazardous material SDS (WHMIS). Our laboratories are repetitive one year to the next and we comply with WHMIS, PHAC, and other agencies. We do not produce non-regulated chemicals on-site.

A brief description of how the institution safely disposes of hazardous, universal, and non-regulated chemical waste:

Sharps, biohazard wastes and other wastes are disposed of in designated containers by trained personnel. Once a semester, a specialized company comes on-site to dispose of the hazardous materials.

A brief description of any significant hazardous material release incidents during the previous three years, including volume, impact and response/remediation:

N.A.

A brief description of any inventory system employed by the institution to facilitate the reuse or redistribution of laboratory chemicals:

Every department is asked to order chemicals needed for one semester only. We try to keep a small inventory. The inventory of chemicals is kept with each department and a master list is shared with security in case of an emergency. Every semester, each department has to submit a list of wastes and unused chemicals to be disposed of.

Does the institution have or participate in a program to responsibly recycle, reuse, and/or refurbish electronic waste generated by the institution?:
Yes

Does the institution have or participate in a program to responsibly recycle, reuse, and/or refurbish electronic waste generated by students?:
Yes

A brief description of the electronic waste recycling program(s), including information about how electronic waste generated by the institution and/or students is recycled:

"Vanier College has a contract with the company Quantum to recycle its electronics. Vanier has been with the company for three years. Quantum can generate a report detailing the number of items received, the weight and the percentage that was resold and recycled. Vanier generates a small revenue from the reselling of its electronics that goes to the Vainer College Foundation. The contract with Quantum reduces the amount of electronic waste the College produces as the company’s recycling rate is 97%+.

There is an annual battery recycling campaign organized with ENJEU. The campaign involves raising awareness about the impact of battery recycling through media and displays platforms. The collection occurs throughout the academic year. There are numerous collection sites across campus such as in the N building lobby, B-205, auditorium and receiving and shipping. Posters around campus are near collection boxes, while infographic arrows indicate where collection boxes are and provide information regarding how batteries are recycled and reused. Campaign details are also posted in the staff newsletter Intercom. Batteries are sent to Call2Recycle Canada to be tabulated and the CEGEP with the greatest weight of batteries wins monetary prizes. "

Is the institution’s electronic waste recycler certified under the e-Stewards and/or Responsible Recycling (R2) standards?:
Yes
