A brief description of any external professional development and training opportunities in sustainability that are supported by the institution :
"Sustainable Happiness is “happiness that contributes to individual,
community, or global well-being without exploiting other people,
the environment, or future generations” (Catherine O’Brien, Ph.D).
It combines positive psychology with sustainability, social justice,
and well-being and has been used to enhance personal and
professional well-being and sustainability at Dawson College since
2015. A certificate program has been developed at Dawson to allow
staff to apply Sustainable Happiness concepts in their work as
teachers, managers, professionals, and support staff. The
certificate is being offered worldwide, and we now have the
opportunity to bring it to Vanier.
Participants in this experiential, applied certificate are introduced to the concept of sustainable happiness and explore its implications, both personally andprofessionally. Members of this inaugural cohort will complete the Sustainable Happiness certificate and be prepared to integrate the concepts into their teaching and their personal lives.
Objectives for participants:
1-Understand that their individual happiness and well-being is interconnected with the happiness and well-being of other people, their community and the natural environment;
2-Become familiar with the basic principles of sustainability;
3-Become familiar with basic highlights from positive psychology research;
4-Have the capacity to think criticallyabout information related to happiness and well-being (i.e., understand the difference between popular views of happiness versus evidence-based statements about happiness and well-being);
5-Identify opportunities to apply sustainable happiness to their professional life;
6-Be able to articulate their role as both choice makers and change makers with respect to sustainable happiness;
7-Respond to questions from the Sustainable Happiness journal;
8-Reflect on personal thuoghts and feelings connected to course content and experiences through journal writing and discussions;
9-Demonstrate the ability to apply lessons learned, both personally and professionally, through designing a sustainable happiness project.
