Faculty, staff, and students formed the Sustainability Council when USU joined the President's Climate Commitment in 2007 to ensure present and future Aggies have the means to thrive. The vision is to infuse environmental, social, and economic sustainability throughout USU’s academic and operational endeavors.

The Sustainability Council advises the President and the University on policies and procedures to implement the American College and University Presidents Carbon Commitment. Work groups focus on air quality & transportation, curriculum, energy & the build environment, and engagement.

A brief description of each sustainability office:

The Office of Social Action and Sustainability was formed fall of 2022 and is composed of the previous Service Center and Student Sustainability Office. The mission of the Student Sustainability Office was to make a concrete place on campus where students can funnel their green ideas, obtain research grants for sustainability, and find out more ways to participate in sustainable living both during their time at USU and into their futures. The new office is so new that it does not have a new mission. USU Center for Community Engagement, which includes the new office, recently hired CCE hired Giselle Bandley to serve as the Coordinator of Sustainability & Social Action within Student Affairs.

A brief description of the activities and substantive accomplishments of the institution-wide coordinating body or officer during the previous three years:

The Sustainability Council serves as the campus-wide coordination body, so efforts from Facilities and Student Affairs work together.

Over the past three years, the university developed a Greenhouse Gas Reduction plan. It installed more on-site solar on the Fine Arts Visual building and Gateway Parking Terrace. The university is in the process of developing a Central Energy Plant Carbon Reduction plan to examine the steps required to move away from fossil fuels, and it is also in the process of developing a Drought and Resiliency Plan to mitigate and adapt to the effects of drought. Additionally, greenhouse gas emissions have continued to decline year over year, and students taught each year by faculty with sustainability in their classes number in the thousands.
