A brief description of the institution’s featured program, initiative, or accomplishment:
USU began composting and participating in the Food Recovery Network in 2015. Since then, the university has added an electric vehicle and tub grinder to the compost system. Students have also started the USU Campus Kitchen and gleaning team. These programs keep thousands of tons of food waste out of the landfill while providing record numbers of students with food in the student nutrition access center (SNAC). Additionally, the Utah Conservation Corps Urban Farm grows food to meet fresh produce needs of SNAC and the Cache Community Food Pantry.

Since 2007, USU has drastically reduced water use. Savings primarily come from changes in space use and leak detection. Newer buildings also meet LEED Silver standards or above, which means newer landscapes are more water efficient.

In 2007, USU committed to become carbon neutral by 2050. In 2019, the Faculty Senate and USU Student Association passed resolutions asking the university to redouble its efforts. A Greenhouse Gas Steering Committee is now creating a plan to reduce carbon emissions more quickly.
