Sustainability Committee(s)
Yes
The charter or mission statement of the committee(s) or a brief description of each committee's purview and activities:
The Sustainability Council strives to make UW-Whitewater a more environmentally sustainable university by coordinating cross-departmental sustainability initiatives, by encouraging sustainability research and teaching, by assessing the campus’s environmental impact, and by supporting student sustainability efforts. Past projects include the implementation of a Sustainability Fund grant program for student projects, developing the “Savanna Project” faculty curriculum workshop, planning events such as Earth Week and RecycleMania, and assessing and compiling sustainability achievements to inform long-range planning efforts.
Starting in 2015 and revised every three years after, the Sustainability Council completes a sustainability assessment known as Sustainability Tracking and Ratings System (STARS), coordinated by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). Data collected through this process is used for internal reporting to key constituencies and leadership as well as external marketing to media sources and through participation in other appropriate recognition programs that establish a culture of sustainability on campus. This data will also be used to develop a Sustainability Plan for the campus that ties into other documents, such as the Strategic Plan or Master Plan.
Sustainability Council faculty and staff members are appointed by the Provost to three-year terms. The council meets once a month during the academic year.
