Has the institution conducted a GHG emissions inventory that includes all Scope 1 and 2 emissions? :
Yes

Does the institution’s GHG emissions inventory include all, some or none of its Scope 3 GHG emissions from the following categories?:
All, Some, or None
Business travel Some
Commuting Some
Purchased goods and services None
Capital goods None
Waste generated in operations All
Fuel- and energy-related activities not included in Scope 1 or Scope 2 Some
Other categories None

A copy of the most recent GHG emissions inventory:
A brief description of the methodology and/or tool used to complete the GHG emissions inventory, including how the institution accounted for each category of Scope 3 emissions reported above:

UW-Whitewater has transitioned current and historical greenhouse gas emissions inventory to Sustainability Indicator Management & Analysis Platform (SIMAP).

Waste generated by campus was captured in the inventory in its entirety, but since the landfill does methane recovery and electricity generation, it is shown as a renewable energy source with a negative emissions impact on the emissions inventory.

Has the GHG emissions inventory been validated internally by personnel who are independent of the GHG accounting and reporting process and/or verified by an independent, external third party?:
No

A brief description of the internal and/or external verification process:

The data collected is not verified internally or by an independent, external third party.

Documentation to support the internal and/or external verification process:
---

Does the institution wish to pursue Part 2 and Part 3 of this credit? (reductions in Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions):
Yes

Gross Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions:

Start Date End Date
Performance Year July 1, 2017 June 30, 2018
Baseline Year July 1, 2013 June 30, 2014

A brief description of when and why the GHG emissions baseline was adopted (e.g. in sustainability plans and policies or in the context of other reporting obligations):

The 2015 STARS Report used the 2014 Fiscal Year as the performance year. Since that year is more accurately representative of our physical campus development and the assessment methods were more robust, that has been adopted as the new baseline moving forward.

A brief description of the institution’s GHG emissions reduction initiatives, including efforts made during the previous three years:

Many of these efforts are related to energy savings, recycling, and other campaigns that are covered in other areas of the report. At this time, no specific initiatives or efforts have been made with the primary goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, the more appropriate place to account for these projects are listed under their respective areas in other places in STARS reporting.

Data source(s) and notes about the submission:

Gross Scope 1 GHG emissions from stationary combustion = Other On-Campus Stationary
Gross Scope 1 GHG emissions from other sources = Direct Transportation, Refrigerants & Chemicals
Gross Scope 2 GHG emissions from purchased electricity = Purchased Electricity
Gross Scope 2 GHG emissions from other sources = Purchased Steam / Chilled Water
Gross Scope 3 Business Travel = Directly Financed Air Travel and Other Directly Financed Travel (reimbursed personal vehicle miles). Mileage of rental vehicles or public transportation not available.
Gross Scope 3 Fuel- and energy-related activities not included in Scope 1 or Scope 2 = T&D Losses

Solid waste uses methane recovery and electricity generation, which yields a negative result in the SIMAP calculator. STARS does not allow for negative numbers, so 0 reported for "Waste Generated in Operations."

Data for business travel based on FY 17 numbers. Data still unavailable for FY 18 but will be updated once it becomes available.

Data on commuting not currently available, but will be updated once an estimate is made. Currently investigating transportation survey to prove better data to use retroactively to previous fiscal years up to the new baseline year.

Data for energy intensive space based on 2015 calculations, which have likely not changed due to a lack of major renovation projects. However, a request with Campus Planning for updated numbers is currently not available. Report will be amended in all relevant categories if new or improved data becomes available.
