A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome :
UW-Stout's I LOVE TAP WATER program began in 2010 to encourage the UW-Stout community to use tap water instead of plastic water bottles. Devised as an alternative to banning water on our campus, we believe this program aids in long-term behavioral change of our students, faculty, and staff. Since the beginning of the campaign in 2010, UW-Stout has installed 51 hydration stations across campus. According to bottles saved counters on these stations in March 2013, the campus has saved 840,383 plastic water bottles.
A focus group conducted at UW-Stout in 2013 looked at the impact of campus initiatives. It indicated that this campaign has altered social norms for students, making it common-place for students to use water bottles from home instead of throw-away containers.
