MAPPING THE ST. CROIX VALLEY: BEYOND SUSTAINABILITY
The St. Croix Institute for Sustainable Community Development, established on campus in 2007, branched out across the river and state to become the St. Croix Institute in 2014. As a step toward a large goal of naming the region as a national heritage site, a myriad of campus and Institute efforts are recorded within a digital mapping project, “Mapping the St. Croix Valley: Beyond Sustainability.” A multimodal mapping of the lower St. Croix Valley’s quadruple bottom line approach to sustainability initiatives provides an interactive and accessible digital showcase for ways that science, nature, culture, economy and creativity intersect with community. The map tour highlights regional examples of sustainability within the intersection of social, economic, ecologic and community spheres. Color-coded keys on the map link to detailed information and imagery, while future initiatives placed on the map as vision markers, will promote discussion about campus and community priorities.

Dr. Jill Coleman-Wasik is a member of the planning team for the St. Croix Summit.
Annually, the St. Croix Water Resources Planning Team (the Basin Team) and the St. Croix River Association present the St. Croix Summit, a conference dedicated to presenting information about the health of the St. Croix River and its watershed.
The Basin Team is an interstate, interagency partnership formed in 1993 to address water resource issues in the St. Croix Basin. It has developed water quality goals for the St. Croix and is working to implement water quality protection, outreach, and monitoring.
The SCRA’s mission is to protect, restore and celebrate the St. Croix River and its watershed. With an approach based on partnerships, SCRA is working to realize a vision for the St. Croix as a place where rivers run free and clean, a diverse habitat sustains our unique and diverse flora and fauna, people have access to our National Park and the park flourishes, towns throughout the basin thrive, and people celebrate the river.
