In 2009-10, a first year residential learning community titled iRock had a sustainability theme in addition to personal wellness and social justice themes built in. 44 students participated and took a common cohort of courses (ENGL100, SOCI100, GEOG120, ESM105). Faculty worked sustainability into the curriculum through a common read (Aldo Leopold's A Sand County Almanac).

For the 2010-11 academic year, iRock has changed its name to uMatter. The course requirements remain the same; however, the sustainability theme has been dropped.
