Sustainable and Renewable Energy Systems(SRES)

A brief description of the undergraduate degree program:
The SRES is an interdisciplinary program designed to enhance the knowledge of students with regard to sustainable and renewable as well as traditional energy sources and their impacts on the environment and society. Traditional energy sources include coal, hydro, nuclear, oil, or natural gas, where non-traditional sources include renewable energy such as wind, solar, geo-thermal, wave, hydrogen, and bio-energy.

The program strives to help UW-Platteville students develop an in-depth understanding of issues related to energy and renewable energy including bio-fuels and renewable products and associated markets. Another goal of the program is to increase the public awareness related to renewable energy and renewable products through presentations, forums, and discussions. The program offers an interdisciplinary major and minor in which students can apply their academic expertise to the area of energy and renewable energy. Ultimately, the program graduates students who understand technical, economic, social, political, and environmental aspects of various sources of energy and become more knowledgeable citizens.

A brief description of the undergraduate degree program (2nd program):
Environmental engineering is the application of scientific and engineering principles to improve and maintain the environment for the protection of human health, nature’s beneficial ecosystems and biodiversity, and for environment-related enhancement of the quality of human life. Through education and experience, environmental engineers develop an understanding of the earth’s biological, chemical, physical and geological systems. They use this information to develop engineering plans for solutions to environmental problems caused by pollution. They also develop pollution prevention plans to keep environmental problems from developing in the first place.

Ecological Reclamation and Resource Management

A brief description of the undergraduate degree program (3rd program):
Reclamation is the practice of restoration and management of lands disturbed in the process of utilizing the earth's natural resources. As such, reclamation is a distinct profession. Although a large part of reclamation involves restoration of highly disturbed lands, a significant portion deals with natural landscapes, agricultural lands, industrial and urban lands, as well as wetlands.

The Sustainable and Renewable Energy Systems Minor is designed to be a hands-on interdisciplinary program with an emphasis on the study of the economic, social, and environmental aspects of various energy sources including renewable energy and bio-fuels. The SRES minor is a university-wide minor which means students from any major can obtain the minor.

UW-Platteville graduates who complete the Environmental Science and Conservation major should be able to:

understand, define, and explain how geographic inquiry examines human and environmental systems from local to global scales;
apply the concepts of space, place, and region to explain patterns of culture, politics, and economies;
apply geographic techniques to examine spatial variation and diversity in human and environmental systems;
collect, analyze, and effectively communicate data to answer questions about the past, present, and future of our human and physical environment;
articulate a thoughtful, creative, and ethical perspective that utilizes environmental principles to advance the sustainability of our world.

A brief description of the undergraduate minor or concentration (3rd program):
This program helps students learn innovation in business. In particular, they focus on social entrepreneurship which strives to make the world a better place. "Make your dream more of an inevitability. Find a way to make money doing what you love. How can you align your strengths and passion with a need in the world? What skills are you mastering to help you achieve your dream? Honing your entrepreneurial skills now will enhance your marketability, your career, and your life. Join the Campus Entrepreneurs Organization; participate in entrepreneurship events and consider minoring in entrepreneurship at UW-Platteville."
