UW-Platteville has a student run business, Platteville Sunflower Oil Company, which has a strong sustainability focus. Started in 2013, students from any degree across campus can enroll in the one-credit class to run the Platteville Sunflower Oil Company which produces locally grown, organic sunflower oil for cooking. The students have complete oversight of all business operations from production to sales and marketing. All profits from the sales of the oil help to fund sustainability and renewable energy related education and community engagement throughout southwestern Wisconsin. The campus sustainability coordinator and entrepreneurship faculty member are joint advisers to the business.
