The Campus Sustainability Plan (2008) set a long term vision for research: Scholarly activities by faculty, staff and students generate and test ideas for creating a sustainable future.

The Campus Sustainability Council has approved a definition of Sustainability Research as:

Sustainability Research contributes to understanding the environmental, social, and/or economic needs of current and future generations. These human needs should be interpreted broadly to recognize the challenges of ecological integrity and quality of life.
