The campus Recyclemania campaign included posters in all residence halls (by Eco-Reps) and academic buildings (by students taking a Campus Sustainability course). Email was sent to student lists reminding them of campus recycling rules and the Recyclemania contest dates. Eco-Reps ran a weekly recycling quiz with a prize drawing. Eco-Reps borrowed a “BagMonster” suit from Chico Bags, Inc. to discourage use of throw-away items and encourage re-usable items. They used the suit for random tours of residence halls and the Student Union, with give-aways of re-usable bags. The Campus Sustainability class tabled in the student union to collect student signatures for a recycling pledge.
A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign(s):
UW Oshkosh completed the 2011 Recyclemania with the 14th highest recycling rate in the competition, 60.66%. This is much higher than the 2010 annual recycling rate of 46.1% or the 2010 Recyclemania rate of 48.44%.
