A brief description of the sustainability-focused immersive program(s) offered by the institution, including how each program addresses the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of sustainability:
UW-Milwaukee offers several immersive, sustainability-focused educational study programs, including study abroad programs such as:
Germany-Global Architecture + Design- The Global Architecture + Design program invites design, architecture, or sustainability majors or minors to create model cities that address climate change by reducing the environmental footprint of buildings. All courses are taught in English, and students take the required Future Cities Design Studio; Design and Sustainability Seminar; and Science and Technology Workshop. Hands-on workshops with cutting-edge technology are led by experts from Berlin’s architecture and design community. All courses are complemented with community activities and excursions beyond the city to enhance classroom learning and provide intercultural understanding.
Cuba- Cuba SARUP: Understanding Cuban Urbanism in Havana- This program exposes students to unique aspects of Cuban urban planning and architecture that include historic preservation, urban sustainability and neighborhood development.
Germany Engineering: Environmental & Sustainable Engineering- Program features lectures by professionals and experts in the fields of environmental engineering, sustainability and renewable energies. The seminar will focus on the important issues of climate policy and renewable energy resources, specifically: solar-thermal, wind energy, biomass, and photovoltaics.
Mexico Atmospheric Science: Air Pollution & Ancient Cultures- Ancient structures such as pyramids and their once-colorful stucco coverings are easily damaged by acid rain. In the developing countries of Latin America, efforts to protect these sites from environmental corrosion are in their early stages. Students will examine firsthand the relationships between meteorology, air pollution, and cultural heritage.
