Data source(s) and notes about the submission:

The total number of students is full-time students in Fiscal Year 2013. The number of community service hours is a very conservative figure. It does not encompass the total number of hours UWM students do service each year, or even as a result of services through the Center for Community-Based Learning, Leadership, and Research (CCBLLR). For example, every day CCBLLR does walk-in referrals for students who are matched to a number of local non-profits (if students do service, it is not tracked unless they also sign up for the Student Service Record (SSR) Program). In addition, SSR numbers are not included because there is some overlap, which would inflate the number. CCBLLR estimates that the real number is double this one. Other reasons why the number is conservative:
1. Lots of service learning goes on at UWM outside of the CCBLLR. For example, nearly every Social Work student must do 75 hours of service. CCBLLR plays a big role in helping those students work through those hours, however they may be in the programs listed below, and they may not be, so it becomes difficult to know. In addition, some student organizations do service independently or through a national affiliate, such as Habitat for Humanity. Also, many students do service without ever working through CCBLLR, and while there is overlap with the SSR Program and the numbers below, there are also many SSR students who get their SSR hours done outside of the programs in the chart below. The chart below walks through the math to get to the 53,924 hours number through CCBLLR.

PROGRAM COMMUNITY PARTNER MATH TO GET TO THE NUMBER OF HOURS HOURS

College Bigs and Youth Mentors Program
• Big Brothers Big Sisters

• Lake Valley Camp
• Our Next Generation
200 students X 1.25 hours per week X 25 weeks per year=6,250

Weekly hunger / poverty service programs
• Hope House (T&Th) and The Gathering (Fri)
9 student volunteer hrs/wk X 10 student slots/wk X 50 weeks/year=4,500

Community-based work-study program
• Various MPS schools and Boys and Girls Clubs
• Kingo Church Youth Program
• Reach Out and Read (MCW)
• Other non-profits that are not youth related
90 students on payroll X 240 hours per year by each=21,600

Service Learning
• Over 200 agencies in the database, but only 100 of them are active in any given year
1,200 students enroll in a SL course X most courses require approximately 15 hours per semester=18,000

Episodics (Hunger Clean Up, RAKathon, Interfaith Holiday Party, Alternative Spring Break, MLK day of Service)
• Interfaith, Hope House, Hunger Task Force, MPS, ASB sites out-of-state, Milwaukee County Parks, many, many more throughout the years that CCBLLR has done these events with.
• Note that the Center does events such as these monthly, we just track these though.

Hunger Clean Up 278 students X 3 hours 834
RAKathon 300 students X 3 hours 900
Interfaith Holiday 48 students X 5 hours 240
ASB 40 Students X 40 hours 1600
Total=3,574

Total hours through CCBLLR=53,924
