UWM uses over 1.8 billion gallons of water drawn from Lake Michigan to reject heat from campus buildings via its chilling equipment during the summer months (April through November). In addition, the Great Lakes Water Institute consumes roughly three times as much water as the main campus in order to conduct internationally recognized laboratory research of freshwater.
