A brief description of the employee educators program (1st program):

The Green Office Certification program helps campus offices of any size to become more sustainable workplaces through a three-step certification process. The program is designed to give UW–Madison employees the information and tools they need to learn about sustainability, better understand the impacts of their practices, and create healthy and sustainable work environments.

For each level of certification, participating offices receive an educational presentation from the Green Office team, a checklist of action items to complete, and a two-week check in to discuss their progress and how to move forward. To complete the certification each office assigns at least one Green Officer who attends the presentations and is trained in how to complete the certification process while engaging their peers in the process and general workplace sustainability.

A brief description of the employee educators program (2nd program):

The Green Labs intern team aims to help all laboratories on campus to become more sustainable. Our consultation services provide UW–Madison students, faculty, and staff the information and tools they need to better understand the impacts of their practices and create healthy and sustainable laboratory environments. Guidance and programs cover sustainable purchasing, energy and water efficiency, freezer efficiency, sustainable printing practices, chemical disposal, plastic disposal, waste management, signage, and education and outreach.

The Green Labs Certification program recognizes campus labs for their efforts in reducing their overall environmental impact. The program is designed to educate and empower labs to make more sustainable choices by assessing energy use, waste streams, and purchasing. The certification process takes approximately 8-12 weeks, but the completion time may differ depending on the lab. To complete the certification each lab assigns at least one ambassador who is trained by Office of Sustainability interns and staff to complete the certification process while engaging their peers in the process and general workplace sustainability.

"Train-the-trainer" type programs exist on campus to educate employees who work for dining and housekeeping about composting operations. These programs are supported by staff who train employee leaders to train housing custodial employees. These programs target approximately 175 employees. As this is focused solely on composting operations we are not including this program for recognition in this credit.
