Data was obtained from 4 sources:

Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership (https://www.leadershipstudy.net/about#participating-campuses; 2018 data, currently not publicly released)
- This survey (using a representative sample) provided data on the percent of students who participate in some type of community service in a typical month (44.12%, used to respond to Part 1).
- The survey also asked respondents to indicate hours of community service performed in a typical month across a number of categories
* To avoid potential double-counting with recorded (not survey) data below, the response for Part 2 only included data on community service performed with organizations unaffiliated with UW-Madison or on students own time.
* Respondents were asked to respond to ranges of hours served per month (0, 1-5, 6-10, 11-15, or 16-20), total hours of service performed used averages of each range (i.e., 0, 3, 8, 13, 18) and only counted 7 months for service performed during a typical academic year

Badger Volunteers (https://morgridge.wisc.edu/students/badger-volunteers/)
- Badger Volunteers tracks actual hours served and reported 31,515 hrs for FY18

Community-Based Learning Courses (https://morgridge.wisc.edu/students/community-based-learning/)

Badgers Give Back (https://uwbadgers.com/sports/2018/7/16/badgers-give-back.aspx): Badgers Give Back is the community service program of UW-Madison Athletics. They track actual hours served and reported 4,342 hrs for FY18.
