Research Inventory
The institution’s inventory of its sustainability research that includes names and department affiliations of faculty and staff engaged in sustainability research:
See attached.
A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory (including the types of faculty and staff included as researchers):
First, we developed a list of terms derived from the STARS sustainability research definition and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (e.g., "Sustainability", "Inequality", and "Climate Change"). Next, we obtained a list of the FY18 research grants received by UW-Madison faculty and searched for research project titles that included these terms. We then supplemented this list by searching for grants from departments, centers, and institutes that commonly address issues of sustainability, including:
- Aquatic Sciences
- Forest & Wildlife Ecology
- Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center
- Institute for Research on Poverty
- Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies
- Soil Sciences
- Wisconsin Crop Innovation Center
- Wisconsin Energy Institute
We also supplemented the list with grants from agencies that address issues of sustainability (e.g., U.S. EPA, NREL, National Energy Technology Laboratories).
A faculty-staff team from the Office of Sustainability then reviewed each research project title (and description if necessary) to confirm that it was sustainability research. From this inventory of sustainability research projects we developed a list of all faculty and staff who conduct sustainability research. Finally, additional faculty that conduct sustainability research were identified by faculty and staff during review and validation of the STARS report. The final inventory of researchers addressing sustainability is included in the attachment to this credit.
This analysis included all faculty and only staff who are eligible to serve as a Principal Investigator (PI). Other staff participating in research but not eligible to serve as a PI were not included.
