Pack it up, Pass it on
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
Coordinated by the Student Office of Sustainability in collaboration with the Eau Claire City-County Health Department, Pack It Up and Pass It On is an event that takes place during move out at the end of the spring semester located on Water St. UW-Eau Claire students (presenting their Blugold ID) will have the opportunity to drop off unwanted furniture, mattresses, and other household items free of charge to be donated or properly disposed of.
We do not have data for the baseline year, but as an example, in 2023:
• 273 students came through the line
• Total Electronics recycling for both days: 1,728 lbs of TVs, misc. electronics, and scrap. Additional 19 Freon items collected.
Thursday: typical day with the amount of donations and garbage
• 3 loads of donations (2 family promise, 1 habitat for humanity)
• 1 load of scrap metal: 1,700lbs, $110.50 refund
• 1x40 yard dumpster of mattresses: 48 mattresses
• 3x40 yard dumpsters for garbage: 11.09 tons
Friday: almost twice as busy as the day before, much busier than in the past. We ended up getting an extra dumpster for garbage and had to stop the event about 20-30 minutes early because the 5th dumpster was full and there was no way to get a 6th dumpster at that time of the day. Scrap metal was close to overflowing and the mattress dumpster was full by 2 so some had to go in to the dumpster unfortunately.
• 5 loads of donations (3 family promise, 2 habitat for humanity)
• 1 very full load of scrap metal: 1,800 lbs, refund 117.00
• 1x40 yard dumpster of mattresses: 32 mattresses
• 4x40 yard dumpsters for garbage: 10.91 tons
