The Student Office of Sustainability (SOS) is one of nine commissions within our Student Senate. Our general assembly meets on a weekly basis to discuss the allocation of “The Green Fund."

This fund was the first established within the UW System (2008) and was created by students through a student referendum. The fund is operated by students and can support non-academic and non-facilities related projects which benefit students at UWEC. It is run by multiple student directors and student coordinators, who for years where the main voice for sustainability work at UWEC.

The UWEC Green fund is also the largest in the UW System, beginning with a fee of $8 per student, totaling about $185,000 annually, ensuring young people can continue to lead the conversation about sustainability at UWEC.

A brief description of the multi-stakeholder decision-making process used to determine which projects receive funding through the sustainability projects fund:
The Green Fund is allocated by 12 voting members. These 12 people must apply each fall and are appointed by the student co-directors of the Student Office of Sustainability. A proposal for funding is introduced in week one and voted on in week two by the 12 voting members.

Applications for funding over $5,000 are also routed through the student senate body as a secondary approval mechanism.
