Workers are involved in several different committees across campus such as the Central Workplace Safety and Health Committee, Laboratory Safety Committee, BioSafety Committee and Radiation Safety Committee. Workers involved in these committees are asked to provide feedback on safety culture, initiatives and issues across campus. They participate in both the lab inspection program and the general areas inspection program. Committee members are also involved in any serious incident investigations.
All staff are encouraged to report hazards and near misses, and have multiple avenues to do so.
Workers are provided audiometric testing through the hearing conservation program and respirator fit testing should they need to use a respirator during their work.
Physical Plant Staff are provided with monthly safety meetings that involve a variety of training topics and safety information. These meetings are an additional outlet for them to raise safety issues or concerns, ask questions, suggest future topics and request training.
The Safety Office works with staff to create job hazard assessments and safe work procedures for their job tasks.
There is a fire warden program in which staff volunteers are provided with hi-viz vests and training on emergency events and evacuation.
The University provides a free mobile device app called UW Safe through which staff and students can report incidents, find safety information and receive push notifications of any emergency situations on campus.
