Norway-Canada Sustainable Energy Project

In 2016, the University of Winnipeg initiated the Norway-Canada Sustainable Energy Project, a research partnership with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Through this project, 20 students will be funded to study renewable energy and energy policy under the supervision of an advisor from each university. This program will culminate in a symposium in Norway in 2018.
Through this partnership, our institutions developed research and study opportunities related to sustainable energy systems in Canada and Norway.
Funding was provided for travel between countries to participate in these research activities as part of thesis projects or project courses between now and November of 2018. Students worked with supervisors from UWinnipeg and from NTNU in Gjovik, conducting research in the following areas:
- Feasibility of Waste-to-Bioenergy Heating for the Community of Churchill
- Sustainable Energy Management Case Studies in Norway and Canada
- Arctic SDI Geoportal Data Relevance and Security
- Energy Policy and Infrastructure in Canada and Norway
- National Energy Information Systems
The Norway-Canada Sustainable Energy Project was also a milestone for sustainability education at the University. This research exchange program saw students from the University and the Norwegian Institute for Science and Technology travel to each other’s countries to study approaches to sustainable energy management. This past year included a cross-listed course on Sustainable Energy which was taught to 36 undergraduates and 10 Masters’ students from the University and the University of Waterloo.
The program wrapped up in 2018 with a symposium in Norway where student and faculty research results will be shared with all project participants as well as community and private sector stakeholders.
