A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome :
The UWSA is a community bicycle repair stop in the heart of the UWinnipeg campus. What makes it innovative is in its foundation, its design and in its programming. The idea originated with a group of students known as the Ice Riders, a collection of students who make a point of celebrating and promoting winter cycling. They forged a partnership with the university and in 2009 a student-led referendum allowed the University of Winnipeg Students’ Association (UWSA) to start collecting a $2 levy from each student to pay for a new structure on campus which would become the Bike Lab. This allowed for the UWSA to hire an architect to design the structure affordably using two used donated shipping containers. The structure opened in 2011 and in 2014 it earned a National Urban Design Award. What makes the Bike Lab unique is its community programming. While it is open to staff and students, it also offers programming targeting local community members, including special programming for youth, members of the LGBT community and Indigenous kids and high school students.
