A brief description of the green building rating system(s) used and/or a list of certified buildings and ratings:
In 2008, Western established an operational policy that all new building construction and retrofits will achieve a minimum LEED Silver certification. In 2014, this policy was revised to say: "Best efforts should be made to undertake design and construction at a level to achieve a minimum of LEED silver certification, noting there may be renovation projects where this is not achievable without significant additional expenditures. In this case, the Vice-President (Resources & Operations) shall have the final recommendation. This statement does not mean that formal certification will be sought."
Currently, Western has 1 LEED New Construction building on campus:

ustainability in Design of Facilities: In planning the campus of the future the University will incorporate sustainability of the environment in the planning and design process. This includes promoting energy conservation in the operation of facilities, provision of facilities to support alternate transportation arrangements, and the protection of natural and wetland areas throughout the campus (Western Master Plan, 2007)

- Avian Research: 16,705 sq feet (completed in 2008)
- Support Services Building: 159,999 sq feet (completed in 2008)
- Western Sports & Rec. Center: 175,616 sq feet (completed in 2007)
- Althouse College: 144063 sq feet (99% renovated (floor, ceilings, windows, shades, electric power)- not considered for LEED
- Biology & Geology Sciences: not eligible because renovation affected less than 50% of total building floor area (59,129 out of 171,202 sq ft)
