A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory (including the types of faculty and staff included as researchers):
The inventory includes Associate Professors, Assistant Professors, and Professors. It does not include adjunct faculty or faculty emeriti, graduate student or post-doctoral research, or staff-led research. Research related to sustainability was identified through publicly available research profiles hosted on department websites. Staff from the Sustainability Office and Office of Research searched through research interests and expertise to identify connections to sustainability based on keywords and topics, and/or connections to research on specific sustainability themes, such as water, energy, climate change, transportation, food system sustainability, biodiversity and conservation, air quality, land use, waste, and sustainable buildings. In addition, the Office of Research looked through lists of affiliated faculty members of major university research institutes related to sustainability, including the Water Institute, Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Energy, and the Interdisciplinary Centre on Climate Change, as the faculty descriptions there often included more specific reference to applications of particular research towards sustainability challenges. The Office of Research also searched through recent publication data to ensure that research outputs corresponded to stated research interests and expertise.
