A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation :
First Year Programs at UW has created a series of online modules for all incoming undergraduate students, which includes prominent sections on sustainability. The online modules include information from UW Sustainability about overall sustainability efforts and resources at UW, information from UW Recycling about correct recycling and composting practices, and information from UW Transportation about sustainable commuting options. Incoming undergraduates are also provided with a print copy of the Husky Guide, which includes information on sustainability.
Incoming Graduate Students can take the online U501 self-guided online resource which serves as an orientation to the UW. This resources includes information on sustainable transportation options and the UW Food Pantry.
Every year, UW Sustainability and other departments such as UW Recycling, UW Transportation Services, UW Surplus and many sustainability-related student groups organize outreach events during Dawg Daze, a large-scale annual welcome event for first year students. The intent of the outreach is to share information about overall sustainability at UW. Environmentally-passionate staff and students share their knowledge and enthusiasm for all the green efforts going on around campus and demonstrate how students can positively impact the UW with energy conservation, reducing water usage, what to do with that coffee cup, and more. Interactive and informative events such as a recycling sort, sustainability campus tour, and sustainability open house are just a sampling of ways we engage and inform students.
The University also uses the freshman and transfer orientation programs to promote the U-PASS and alternative modes of commuting to the campus.
