A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory:

The breadth and scope of research happening at the University of Washington makes it difficult to conduct a full inventory. We worked with the Office of Research and utilized the grant database to attempt the inventory.

The Office of Research attempted to identify all research grants which were active in the 2019-2020 academic year, including the PIs for those projects. This created a list of about 7,400 projects. We ran an initial keyword search on the list using keywords generated during the process of identifying sustainability research for the 2018 STARS report. We then manually checked the list to determine if each match should be designated as sustainability research.

The research inventory includes grant-funded research projects identified as sustainability research, as well as the PIs on those research projects. All PIs on the list as counted as engaging in sustainability research as they are PI for a project identified as sustainability research.

This likely under-counts the actual number of employees conducting sustainability research, as it only counts those researchers with a federally-funded research grant, and only includes the PI when there may be multiple researchers working on a project.

What counts as a "department" in the research data is self-determined by individual schools and college, and may not exactly align with the definition used elsewhere to determine number of academic departments at the UW.
