The UW Environmental Stewardship Committee provides recommendations to the executive leadership for sustainability and resource conservation policies across all three of our campuses while overseeing progress towards meeting the goals of the UW Climate Action Plan.

Committee Role and Structure

The Committee communicates with individuals, groups, and committees across the University, both to gather information about ongoing sustainability measures, and to communicate progress. The Committee also works to identify emerging and growing opportunities for collaboration among academic and administrative units, offering the campus as a learning lab for students and faculty to work with administration on increased operational sustainability.

The Committee reports to the President, Provost, Vice Presidents and Vice Provosts.

The Committee is represented by individuals from seven administrative departments, nine academic units, four students, as well as members from the UW Bothell and UW Tacoma campuses and ex-officio members from the Medical Centers and Housing & Food Services.

The Committee meets several times each academic year.

In addition, both our Bothell and Tacoma campuses maintain campus-specific sustainability committees.

A brief description of each sustainability office:

UW Sustainability coordinates and promotes sustainability programs and initiatives by informing, engaging, and connecting members of the UW community. Established in 2008, UW Sustainability provides leadership and support for the Environmental Stewardship Committee (ESC), the Climate Action Plan (CAP) and is leading the campus in the development of the University's first comprehensive sustainability plan. The office gathers and reports data for the online UW Sustainability Dashboard and compiles campus information for rating systems such as STARS. Each year the office organizes a campus-wide sustainability event in the fall and helps organize campus Earth Day events in the spring.

In 2018, the Business Diversity Program was added to the UW Sustainability portfolio. BDP provides small, minority & women-owned, veteran, and diverse businesses visibility to opportunities at the University,

UW Sustainability is tasked with coordinating sustainability efforts across the entire University of Washington, including creating institutional sustainability plans, a process that started in 2018.

The West Campus Utility Plant - the first university project to win an Envision Gold Award from Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure - includes an interpretive element to provide a window into the University’s commitment to sustainability. Six video screens facing the street display information and stories about sustainability, with the content curated by UW Sustainability.

In 2015 the UW and Seattle City Light created a partnership through City Light’s Green Up program to advance renewable energy on campus and beyond.

The annual Sustainability Fair has provided an opportunity for a diverse array of groups across UW to tell their sustainability stories in conjunction with National Campus Sustainability Month.

UW has earned a perfect score on The Princeton Review’s Green Honor Roll for eight straight years.

UW Sustainability provides administrative support to the student-funded Campus Sustainability Fund (CSF) which recently passed the $2 million mark in total grants since its creation.

UW Sustainability was a founding partner of the Livable City Year program, an EPIC-N program which connects local communities with UW faculty and students to work on real-world projects around livability and sustainability.

UW Sustainability worked with other campus partners and Special Olympics USA on sustainability efforts around the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games held on campus.

In the summer of 2018, UW Sustainability director Claudia Frere-Anderson was also named director of the UW Business Diversity Program. A process of fully integrating the two programs is underway.
