Does the institution have policies and/or programs in place to reduce emissions from air travel?:
Yes

A brief description of the policies and/or programs:

UW encourages use of several resources and programs to reduce the amount of air travel. While in-person meetings are critical to the University’s mission as a global research institution, video conferencing technology is available and promoted to faculty, staff, and researchers to optimize the available resources that would be alternative to air travel.

While it cannot substitute for all professional travel, videoconferencing represents and should be considered an increasingly viable means of achieving many of the academic and organizational goals of long‐distance travel.

The University is undertaking several improvements to monitor GHG measurements from air travel. One improvement will look to develop a ‘cost-to-air-mile’ conversion factor. Measurement data obtained from travel expenditure information will be calculated to develop a baseline from which to track and monitor air travel activity.

The University is reviewing the cost-benefit of enhancing the current eTravel database that would include a mileage calculator based on a coded entry for travel destination. This enhancement would provide better information for tracking and monitoring GHG related to air travel.
