Bachelors of Science in Climate Science Degree Program

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
In April of 2023, UVic formally released the innovative BSc in Climate Science program. This program is distinguished by its pioneering interdisciplinary approach, bridging the Faculties of Science and Social Sciences. Unlike conventional climate science programs that typically compartmentalize "hard" atmospheric science and "social" impacts, this initiative seamlessly integrates both aspects. Moreover, it transcends traditional boundaries by incorporating Indigenous perspectives and ways of knowing.

One significant outcome of this innovation is the provision of a unique and comprehensive education in climate science. Students enrolled in the program acquire a well-rounded understanding that encompasses not only the scientific fundamentals but also the societal implications of climate change. This holistic approach empowers students with the skills and knowledge essential for addressing the urgent challenges posed by climate change.

The program's commitment to merging the "hard" and "social" facets of climate science positions graduates to translate their knowledge into tangible actions. By fostering a deep understanding of the interconnectedness between scientific principles and societal impacts, students are equipped to develop meaningful climate solutions that address both human and environmental needs.

Furthermore, the BSc in Climate Science stands out as a trailblazer on North America's West Coast, being the first degree program to receive accreditation for delivering on the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This accreditation underscores the program's commitment to producing graduates who are not only well-versed in climate science but are also poised to contribute significantly to global sustainability efforts.

In terms of positive measurable outcomes, the program's incorporation of co-operative education options, field schools, and research experiences enhances the overall educational experience. Students benefit from practical, hands-on learning opportunities that prepare them to make a substantial impact in the field of climate science. This innovative approach ensures that graduates are not only knowledgeable but also possess the practical skills and experiences necessary to navigate and address complex real-world challenges.

In summary, the BSc in Climate Science program at UVic stands as an innovative model in higher education, departing from traditional approaches to climate science education by seamlessly merging foundational science with social impacts. Its accreditation for delivering on the United Nations' SDGs further solidifies its position as a leader in preparing students for meaningful contributions to the global efforts in addressing climate change.
