A brief description of the sustainable operations and maintenance policy/program and/or O+M rating system(s) used:
The University of Vermont maintains a high level of commitment to environmental sustainability for all new buildings and existing buildings. UVM has several university-wide policies and programs for existing building maintenance and operations which include:
1) UVM Green Cleaning Policy – The green cleaning policy sets cleaning standards which include use of environmentally-friendly cleaning products (Green Seal, UL Ecologo certified), ozonated water for floor cleaning, use of microfiber towels instead of paper, use of vacuums with HEPA filters, energy efficient washers/dryers, paper towel composting. Since 2013 all mid-level managers in the UVM custodial services department are required to complete the International Executive Housekeepers Association (IEHA) Professional Education Credentialing Program (PECP) and earn their Certification.
2) Retro-commissioning for Existing Buildings – To enhance energy efficiency initiatives on campus, UVM has added a Retro-Commissioning engineer to its Facilities staff. Retro-commissioning is conducted to improve building operational performance and increase efficiency.
3) Water & Energy Use Metering – UVM utilizes building automation systems (BAS) throughout campus with over 40,000 system monitoring meters and points to provide feedback on building performance. Improvements to the BAS include implementation of OSI Pi software to integrate the data points from the various systems into user-friendly visualizations that can be used for analysis to optimize the running of building systems.
4) UVM Grounds Services – Sustainability programs implemented by UVM Grounds Services include:
a.Integrated Pest Management (IPM)- The University of Vermont follows Integrated Pest Management (IPM) methods in the maintenance of its campus landscape (see https://www.uvm.edu/physicalplant/integrated-pest-management-ipm-plan)
b. Use of native, zone hardy site-specific plants
c. Limit irrigation to athletic fields and the main Campus Green only
d. Use mulching mowers and do not bag grass clippings from lawn mowing.
e. Use Liquid Deicers to pretreat walkways and roadways in winter to reduce the use of road salt.
f. Certification as an official Bee Campus through the Bee City USA program.
5) UVM Waste Recycling Program – The Recycling & Zero Waste Program is committed to sustainable materials management at UVM. Practices include:
a. Collection of solid waste, recycling, organics and more from all university buildings across campus.
b. Management of the Surplus Property Program,
c. Coordination of moving services and
d. Support of educational and outreach programs to reduce, reuse, recycle and compost the University's materials stream. UVM comprehensive waste recycling program accounts for recycling and tracking of multiple waste streams across campus generated from building operations (i.e., custodial, staff, students). Continued efforts to improve the program have resulted in additional materials diverted from the landfill and a steady rise in the overall campus recycling percentage rate since 2008.
6) UVM Tobacco Free Campus - UVM became a tobacco-free campus on August 1, 2015 by adopting and implementing a Tobacco Free Policy to promote the health, safety, and well-being of all members of our community.
