Housing:
Residential Life provides several options for students who are looking for safer space and/or LGBTQ+ community in the residence halls. The options for first year students are slightly different than for returners.

Incoming First Year Students -
Most first year UVM students live in one of seven themed learning communities. Learning communities bring students with similar interests together. Each community is expected to address core issues of social justice and inclusion. As you explore each learning community you will find information about the buildings the community occupies including gender-inclusive restroom and shower information (look for the sidebar on the righthand side of the page).

Learning Community & Roommate Preferences -
Incoming students should rank their learning community preferences in their housing and meal plan contract. You can also list one or two roommate preferences. Don't worry if you don't already know someone you want to live with, many lgbtqa+ students meet someone at orientation to room with as they get to know folks in their learning community. You will have a chance after orientation to go back into your contract and specify your roommate preference. If you have concerns about finding a roommate as an lgbtqa+ student, email usand we will try and match you with a student in the same situation.

Alternative Housing for First Year Students -
The LGBTQA+ first year suite is part of the Cultural Crossroads Learning Community, but is physically located away from other first year students in the program. The suite can house up to 6 first year students for the 2019-2020 school year. It is intended for transgender, queer, bisexual, lesbian, gay and students with other diverse sexual and gender identities who need an alternative to other on-campus housing options at UVM. The LGBTQA+ First Year Suite is not a part of the LGBTQA Collaborative. Requests to be moved into the suite from a different housing assignment should be sent to Becky Swem at the Prism Center.
Apply for the LGBTQA+ First Year Suite (this link will take you to a supplemental housing application)

Returning Students -
At least one LGBTQ+ community-focused housing option is usually offered in the student-designed Living/Learning program. These programs are designed by students, for students. For example, the LGBTQA Collaborative is a group of students devoted to learning and expanding awareness of diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, and intersecting identities. For a full list of current offerings please visit https://www.uvm.edu/reslife/student-programs.
Please contact Res Life and/or the Prism Center if you have questions or concerns about your learning community's environment for queer and trans people.

Residential Life statement on Gender-Inclusive Housing -
Res Life also has options for students with unique requests, including summer housing and academic break housing. Please visit Res Life for more information.

Gender Inclusive Restrooms:
Learn about efforts to provide gender-inclusive restrooms at UVM. View the campus map filter for gender-inclusive restrooms in public UVM buildings. Toggle the filters in the left-hand menu to view gender-inclusive restrooms in private buildings.

Healthcare:
LGBTQ+-affirming mental and physical healthcare services are available through the Center for Health and Wellbeing. Visit Student Health Services to find out more about primary care, sexual health, and transition-related care available to students. Prism Center staff are available to answer questions or respond to concerns students may have about seeking care as a queer, trans, or LGBTQ+ person.

Pronoun & Preferred First Name Changes:
All students at the University of Vermont can indicate their preferred first name and pronoun to the University community regardless of whether or not they have legally changed their names. Choosing a preferred name in the BANNER system will automatically change which name appears in many internal locations such as class lists, grade reports, and unofficial transcripts. Update your pronoun and preferred first name and with the Office of the Registrar. If you find that your pronoun or preferred first name is not showing up correctly somewhere on campus, please let us know. The Prism Center works with other Offices to fix errors when they occur.

Reporting Bias or Discrimination:
UVM has a Bias Response Program for reporting bias, an umbrella term that includes, but is not limited to: incidents of harassment, discrimination, hate crimes, and micro-aggressions. Any person who has experienced or witnessed a bias incident is encouraged to report it and seek the necessary resources.
