A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about student commuting, including the timeframe for when the analysis was conducted and how a representative sample was reached, if applicable:

The University of Vermont is a founding member of CATMA (Chittenden Area Transportation Management Association), along with Champlain College and the UVM Medical Center. These institutions formed CATMA in 1992 with a mission to jointly plan transportation and parking to better coordinate land use, enhance mobility options for faculty, staff, employees and students to reduce congestion and reduce environmental impacts.

CATMA conducts biennial student and employee transportation surveys. Above data reflects the results of CATMA’s 2016 Spring Student Transportation Survey. The survey is open for ~4 weeks. Methodology is 100% solicitation. Every commuter and resident study receives an email invitation to participate with survey link embedded in email. Students who do not open survey link receive a reminder email. Overall UVM response rate was 15%, with 8% being commuter student and 7% residential students. Incentives are offered to participants, including $50 Amazon gift cards and $25 gift cards to local grocery store, City Market.

The percentage of students that use each of the following modes as their primary means of transportation to get to and from campus::
Percentage (0-100)

Walk, bicycle, or use other non-motorized means 68.64
