A brief description of how sustainability is included in new employee orientation (including how multiple dimensions of sustainability are addressed):
The program is designed to help ensure that individuals experience a smooth transition into their role at UVM, and provide a forum to discuss a variety of issues related to the climate and culture of the University. All new employees are offered orientation programming that covers the three pillars of sustainability. The orientation program is comprised of two separate and distinct sessions, the New Hire Enrollment Session and the UVM Culture and Community session.
The New Hire Enrollment Session is required for all new employees. This session is facilitated by the Employee Advising Team from Human Resource Services. The New Hire Enrollment session provides new employees an opportunity to:
Understand the many benefits available to them as a University employee
Ask questions of benefits experts
Complete benefits enrollment and payroll forms
The UVM Culture and Community session is facilitated by our Professional Development & Training staff and is open to all new and existing employees. All attendees receive a copy of the Green is Good guide to green living, published by the Office of Sustainability, and a reusable mug. The presentation includes a slide with information about the Office of Sustainability, including contact information. Presenters share information about office composting and recycling, including how to get your office involved and emphasising that both align with UVM’s values. Presenters also explain the campus and city bus system and how they can be accessed by staff. UVM’s farm is highlighted in their presentation and attendees are encouraged to visit. A representative from the Risk Management Department instructs the group on office ergonomics and the recycling of small electronics and light bulbs. Additional topics include:
Our Common Ground
Diversity and Inclusion at UVM
Internet and Data Security
Fire and Personal Safety
Compliance and Ethics
Health and Wellness
Professional Development and Tuition Remission
Preventing Sexual Harassment and Bias
All print materials that aren’t taken by attendees are reused for the next group.
