University of Utah Board of Trustees

The University of Utah is governed by a 10-member Board of Trustees, eight of whom are appointed by the governor of the state of Utah with consent of the Utah Senate. The president of the University of Utah Alumni Association and the president of the Associated Students of the University of Utah serve as ex officio board members.

Subject to the approval of the Board of Trustees, the “university faculty shall have authority . . . to legislate on matters of educational policy. . . . The faculty has a right to a meaningful role in the governance of the University; . . . it has a right to participate in decisions relating to the general academic operations of the university including budget decisions and administrative appointments.” “The legislative power of the University faculty collectively will normally be exercised by the faculty through their representatives in the Academic Senate and the college and Graduate and Undergraduate councils. . .” U-Policy 6-001-III-B-3. Associated Students of the University of Utah (ASUU)

All enrolled students are automatically members of ASUU. ASUU is led and represented by students elected by members. Student government consists of an executive branch, a legislative branch, and a judicial branch.

Staff Council

Staff Council consists of 30 staff members (both exempt and non-exempt) from across campus. They are appointed by the University President for a term of three years, with one-third of the membership rotating off each year.

The university meets monthly with the Each Bench Master Planning Committee: a collection of representatives from all of the community councils adjacent to the university's campus. Major university projects are presented to this group for input.

The university has also established a West Valley Residents Committee to provide input into decisions related to a new hospital and community center being located in that community.
