A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome :

SCIF: In 2009, the University of Utah approved a $2.50 tuition fee per student each semester. The fee goes into the Sustainable Campus Initiative Fund (SCIF) program. SCIF’s mission is to provide funding for real-world projects that improve the University of Utah’s environmental quality and make the campus more sustainable. Every semester students are able to apply to SCIF to receive money to implement their sustainable idea. Since the program began in January 2010, 37 student-led projects have been funded. Approved projects deal with water savings, sustainable irrigation, alternative transportation, recycling and local food systems.
