Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Climate Positive Plan

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

UTM’S Climate Positive Plan is an ambitious framework designed to propel us towards a sustainable future by reducing carbon emissions to net zero – and beyond. The Plan details our path over the next three decades to capture more carbon than we emit. This bold initiative demonstrates our commitment to the University Climate Coalition (UC3), a group of leading North American research institutions dedicated to accelerating the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The foundation of our Climate Positive Plan is built upon the principles identified in our Low Carbon Action Plan: 1) CONSUME, 2) DISTRIBUTE and 3) PRODUCE with special emphasis on Project SHIFT, the centrepiece of our GHG reduction efforts.

This transformative project is a comprehensive series of deep energy retrofits in the Central Utilities Plant that will allow us to modernize the plant and begin to SHIFT away from fossil fuels as the primary heating source. The project will encompass various initiatives, including heating boilers electrification, steam to hot water conversion, controls optimization, and future energy storage solutions. Through project SHIFT, we anticipate a substantial reduction of over 6,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent. This milestone will represent a significant step towards achieving our goals under UC3.
