A brief description of the campaign:

The fourth annual UTM Sustainability Week was held from Monday March 13th to Friday March 17th, 2023, in partnership with UTM Student Union (UTMSU), the UTM Sustainability Office, and the MScSM Student Executive Council (MSEC).

This year the theme for the week will be Acknowledge. Align. Act. As we collectively acknowledge there is a climate crisis and we all have a part to play, align our skills and values to an area of sustainability, and act towards making important changes for the planet. The purpose of this week is to create impact and encourage collaboration on campus towards a more sustainable community on campus and beyond.

Events during sustainability week included:
• Love + Sustainability: A Panel
• City of Mississauga: Project Neutral
• SAGE: Freestore
• OZZI Walkthrough and Incentive: Hospitality and Retail Services
• Sensing Our Relations: A Writing Workshop with SA Smythe
• The Trashion Show!
• Sustainability Campus Tours
• Sustainable Careers Pop-Up Shop
• Blackwood Gallery
• The Waste Ambassadors Present: Just Eat It Documentary Screening
• “Drawing” on Traditional Knowledge as a Community
• Climate Cafe: "How to save the planet with your vote"

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:

Sustainability Week included 26 events engaging students, staff, faculty, librarians, and off-campus partners, such as the City of Mississauga and non-profits. More than 250 participated actively engaged, as well as countless passive engagements throughout the week. Plus, 38 student volunteers helped make this week possible.

Over 150 Freestore items were “sold”, meaning they were donated and given way to the UTM community for free. Two industrail sized collection bins were filled for the Let’s Get Together Tech Collect and E-Waste Drive.

A total of 16 partners were involved in Sustainability Week.

Name of the campaign (2nd campaign):
Sustainable Change Office Program

A brief description of the campaign (2nd campaign):

The Sustainable Change Offices Program is geared to equip staff, faculty and librarian offices on campus with a guide to creating and maintaining a sustainable office space. This program includes point-based, self-assessment checklists for faculty, librarians and staff to assess their current practices, set a baseline, and determine goals for the future. Once the checklists and resource guides have been reviewed and the Sustainable Change Program Form submitted, a certification is issued to the team.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):

UTM adapted the program to best suit the campus and its unique needs. The Sustainability Office offered a pilot in Fall 2022 for the Sustainable Change Office program, resulting in 10 offices signing up with over 220 individuals participating in the program. Many fantastic initiatives were undertaken by the Team Leads and their departments including: clothing swaps, donating books for office libraries, introducing a 3-1 waste bin with composting in office kitchen areas, eliminating single-use items such as individual milk and creamers, purchasing reusable coffee pods or recycling K-pods through TerraCycle. Some teams also organized nature walks and participated in tree planting events.
Overall more than 460 actions were taken by staff during this program.
