A brief description of the student educators program (1st program):

The University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) Sustainability Office launched the Waste Ambassador Program, a program led by passionate students to train and communicate waste sorting practices. UTM recognizes the importance of reducing its ecological footprint and strives to provide a sustainable campus experience. This program is Co-Curricular Record (CCR) approved. Through the Waste Ambassador program, the Sustainability Office hopes to effectively communicate knowledge on waste management to students, staff, and faculty, and to ultimately change behavior through better waste sorting on campus.

Objectives:

• Educate students, staff, and faculty on waste management
• Train passionate students to lead and educate their peers
• Increase the waste diversion rate at UTM (how much of our waste actually goes to recycling or compost vs. landfill)

Sustainability Ambassador Program

A brief description of the student educators program (2nd program):

The aim of this program is to provide experiential learning opportunities for volunteers on the UTM campus to engage in sustainability programming for the wider campus and community. Based on the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, and the Sustainability Triangle, volunteers will engage in opportunities to connect these themes through experiential initiatives. Student educators are interdisciplinary, coming from different programs/fields of study, so they are trained on general sustainability knowledge, and the UN SDGs. Secondly, they are trained on UofT and UTM specific sustainability information, and third, they are trained on specific campus initiatives and programs that they can inform their peers about. For example, students educators are trained on how the OZZI reusable container program works, then they educate other students on the program.

Sustainability Campus Positions

A brief description of the student educators program (3rd program):

The Sustainability Office and the Master of Science in Sustainability Management program both hire work-study students, BikeShare students, as well as summer interns to help educate and engage the UTM community on various sustainability topics. Whether they are developing programming for other students, managing volunteers, or teaching students how to repair or ride a bike. All students are onboarded and trained how to engage with their peers on campus. For example, BikeShare staff received training from BikeChain (non-profit) at the downtown campus, and were well prepared to assist and educate students on campus how to repair their own bikes.
