A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the municipal/local level:
The university has a representative on the San Joaquin Council of Governments (SJCOG) Citizen Advisory Committee and the Stockton Mobility Collective. The Committee provides input on plans, projects and initiatives of SJCOG, many of which are around transportation, alternative transportation and affordable housing.
The Stockton Mobility Collective, a program of SJCOG, coordinates multiple partners and aims to improve transportation options for residents looking for clean, affordable ways to travel to jobs, schools, healthcare, grocery stores and other key destinations.
In 2020 the university signed a letter of support for the San Joaquin Council of Government's Sustainable Transportation Equity Project Implementation (STEP) Grant Application. Part of this initiative included the development of carshare and bikeshare programs in the county, specificaly the City of Stockton. The grant was awarded and in 2023 the university worked closely with SJCOG to look into the feasiblity of carshare and launch bikeshare hubs on campus that were part of a larger network of hubs.

The university is an active member of the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities (AICCU). AICCU works on behalf of the Independent California Colleges and Universities (ICCU) sector to articulate the principles and priorities of its institutions in the higher education ecosystem of California. AICCU provides a strong and visible presence at the state and federal level.
